    GYM-timidation – 7 Tips to be more CONFIDENT and get your butt to the GYM

    Gyms can be really scary. Tons of super-strong looking people lifting weights, running at seemingly lightening speed, and sweating all over each other? For someone who doesn’t know their way around, the scene can be pretty frightening. It’s no surprise that “gymtimidation” is an actual thing that gets in the way of people’s ability to exercise with confidence.

    What exactly causes “gymtimidation?” The top three reasons are feeling unfit, being worried about what other people think of your workout, and the fear of not knowing what you are doing (and everyone realizing how clueless you are). Many of us start out as chronic victims of “gymtimidation.” We hate people watching us work out, and have been known to up and leave the gym if we feel like it’s too crowded. We avoid trying any new exercises where we may run the risk of making a fool of ourselves because we don’t know how to do them perfectly. These feelings of intimidation  often really interfered with the ability to get in shape

     

    1. Pick A Gym That’s Right For You

    catexerciseThe most important thing when deciding what gym to join is identifying your needs. What are you looking for from your gym? What types of exercises do you enjoy? What types of people do you want to work out with?

    At Total FX Fitness we have the ability to scale each workout as needed for individuals. Sometimes it’s as simple as reducing the amount of weight. For other workouts, we change the amount of time or number of rounds. We can even further modify the actual movements based on ability and/or injury.

    So, when we post workout take a picture of the whiteboard, it’s the hardest version. Some do it as written, but more often than not, we make changes based on individual needs. All the while with the goal to get to where one can do the workout as written or as prescribed.

    The beauty of this scalability is that we can have athletes who have been here for years right next to brand new members who just started yesterday. Are the workouts hard? Sure, but when we talk about intensity, it’s all relative. It’s more intense than what you’re doing now, but in a few weeks you’ll be able to push even harder! That’s when the magic happens!

     

    2. Go In With A Plan

    3361097_oKnowing that you’re going to get a great workout, so long as you follow your plan, will make you feel more confident and keep you from letting your negative thought distract you from the task at hand. Day to day, week to week, you will NEVER do an identical workout at Total FX Fitness. Our trainers spend a great deal of time researching the best combination of exercises and techniques that will afford you the best results. Each trainer will explain the class exercises, demonstrate them and tell you which muscle groups are being worked. We are happy to explain every step of the workout to you and how it will help you with strength training, movement and mobility and your overall athletic growth. We are there to support you though every workout.

     

    3. Dress The Part

    dressedupDressing for the gym is no different than dressing for every day life: The better you look, the better you’ll feel. For some reason, working out just seems more fun when you know you look cute (at least at the beginning of the workout). Pick an outfit that makes you comfortable and confident, but leave the tutu, and white gloves at home.

     

     

    4. Consider Personal Training

    richard-simmonsReally don’t know where to begin and afraid to start a class at Total FX Fitness consider signing up for (at least) a single session with a personal trainer. They will evaluate your body and offer tips on what workouts are best for you.. They’ll also show you the correct way to train and use the equipment, which can be very dangerous if used improperly.

     

     

     

     

    5. Avoid Peak Hours

    RUrOaA packed gym can be incredibly intimidating. If you can, try to avoid the gym peak hours (which tend to be our 6am and 5pm workouts). If that’s not possible, try to look at the busyness as a positive. We also ensure no workout has over 20 people which is beneficial to you to ensure your getting the training and coaching you deserve.  We are a community. Our members work together, challenge each other, encourage each other and praise each other. Total FX Fitness is a warm, inviting and friendly environment, where people of all different backgrounds, ages and sexes come together to work toward the goal of TOTAL FITNESS.

     

     

    6. Don’t Compare Yourself to Other People

    Lynda-as-Wonder-Woman-264419It can be disheartening to see the woman next to you curling 20-pound weights when you are struggling to lift your 5-pounders, but remember: Everybody, and every body, is different, so your workout is inevitably going to be unique to you. There is no point in comparing yourself to the people around you. At Total FX Fitness we have the ability to scale each workout as needed for individuals.     7. Remember Why You’re There

    giphyFirst of all, congratulate yourself on actually making it to the gym. You have done your mind and body a favor, and deserve a sincere internal “you go, girl.” Got that? Good. When you’re at the gym, you need to remember that you’re there for you — not for anyone else. Forget about what your fellow gym goers think and concentrate on sweating it out for your physical and mental wellbeing. Besides, chances are everyone else is thinking the same way and couldn’t care less that the person next to them just fell off the bosu or can’t run to the sidewalk.
